In what appears to be first of its kind, DEAN Initiative through its Hygiene Education school project: Hygiene Quest has successfully gathered all the primary education stakeholders in Lagos state for a day hygiene education curriculum workshop.

Semiye Michael, the Executive Director of DEAN Initiative while addressing the participants said ‘The workshop became important in order to not only secure the buy-in of all the layers of primary education authorities but to also build the capacity of the education managers on the interconnectivity of SDGs 3,4 and 6. 


It is very important for the authorities to act in favor of the goals, he said. 


The participants consist of entire leadership of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) led by the Board Chairman, Hon. Wahab Alawiye-King and his management teammembers. Also, in attendance is the Special Adviser to the Lages State Governor on SDGs, Hon. LeKan Fatodu and his team. The core participants are the 20 Education Head of Departments in the Lagos State 20 Local Government Areas and the 20 Education Secretaries to the 20 Lagos State LGAs. Joining them also were Lagos State Private school owner representatives.

Hon. Wahab, the SUBEB Chairman praised DEAN Initiative and DETTOL for using Lagos to demonstrate hygiene education to other states in the country. He promised that the Board will do everything to support the project in Lagos State.


On his part, Hon. Fatodu, SSA to Lagos Governor on SDGs expressed the commitment of Lagos State government to make school safe for children and the hygiene education initiative clicks with the government ambition.


Representing the donors at the workshop, Ms Cassandra Uzor, Senior Brand Manager of Reckitt Benkinser, makers of Dettol Soap outlined how hygiene education aligns with the value of their organization and why Hygiene Quest is an idea they are going to keep investing in.


Both the HODs and Secretaries expressed their excitement while reiterating that the workshop brought to an end to the long-term conflict between the Education HODs and Secretaries who over the years have engaged in power tussles.


This is another win for DEAN and its partners. The workshop took place at the prestigious Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja Lagos on the 19th of September 2021.
