A Woman With A Story (AWWAS) held her first photo exhibition on Sunday, October 15th, 2017 at Thought Pyramid Art Gallery, Wuse, Abuja. The passion to speak up against gender-based violence and love for creative art, particularly, photography, were two things that brought hundreds of people together to witness this maiden edition of the AWWAS photo exhibition in Abuja.
The aim of the exhibition was to build the psyche of the exhibitors (young victimized girls) and raise public awareness against sexual abuse, rape and other forms of victimization that denigrates young women in Africa. Various startling pictures on display through various genres tell the stories of victimized young girls and maligned women through photography.
Many of Nigeria’s gender-based NGOs, diplomats representing the international community and some of Nigeria’s top photographers, including the Haye Okon and Bayo Omoboriowo of the state house were present at the exhibition.
Also in attendance to explore the beauty of photography were: Big Brother Naija’s Tokunbo Idowu (TBoss), Amara Nwankpa of the Yar’Adua Foundation, Temitope Obitunwase of Tahzan Media, among others.
The AWWAS (A Woman With A Story) initiative continues to give young victimized women a voice to showcase their latent skill-sets by providing a platform for tutelage, mentoring and exhibition.
