The Port Harcourt-based environmental advocacy group My Environment My Wealth Nigeria and Ocean Conservancy USA have announced the call for partnership for the International Coastal Cleanup 2022 in Nigeria.
The event tagged "IT IS NOT MY TRASH BUT IT IS MY PLANET-#MyTrashChallenge" will be held this September through November across the globe.
International Coastal Cleanup Day on September 17 is a day set aside to bring cleanliness and purity to the environment. The day was started as a way to raise awareness about the growing pollution on various beaches, oceans, and waterways around the world.
According to Wonne Afronelly, convener of My Environment My Wealth Nigeria, "We are working with partners across all states in Nigeria to ensure more impact is achieved. For the activities of the day, we would provide: coaching on use of the Clean Swell App; promotional materials; educational materials; volunteer trash data cards; trash free brochures; and certificates (English, French, etc.) all from Ocean Conservancy USA, with water test kits from EarthEcho International USA.
Wonne explained that all partners must do is: use #MyTrashChallenge as the group name on the Clean Swell App during cleanup; record all trash collected on trash data cards; send collated trash data to the team; names of participants or partners; water test results; and photos of the location before and after cleanup.
She stated that individual participation is welcomed as a team of 5 to 10 friends can also organize their own cleanups in different locations in Nigeria. She added, "Cleanup just got easier and sexier!. Take an ECO pledge today to organize or join a cleanup around your locality. Join the #1000ManMarch, #MyTrashChallenge, and #TheECOpledge now!.
